Viega Rotguss 90° threaded elbow 1″ (model 3090, Art. 269234) changes the direction of the line by a right angle. Each Rp 1 female end takes a pipe, nipple or fitting with a 1″ male thread.

The body is gunmetal of grade Rotguss, and the parallel female threads follow DIN EN 10226-1. When you plan the pipework, allow for the 38 mm length L and the 18 mm Z dimension of each leg. No sealing material comes with the elbow: Viega allows hemp with paste, PTFE thread tape or thread-sealing cord, and only non-hardening sealants with the DVGW mark.

For a straight joint in the same size, the matching part is the Viega Rotguss 1″ coupling with two Rp 1 threads. Other shapes and sizes are collected in the range of threaded elbows, tees and couplings. According to Viega, its gunmetal threaded fittings suit drinking water, heating water and gases, and Art. 269234 is listed on DVGW certificate DV-7401AO2957.

What do female and male thread mean, and which one does my pipe need?

A female thread is cut inside the opening of a fitting, a male thread on the outside of a pipe or nipple. This elbow is female at both ends (Rp 1), so each end needs a pipe or nipple with a 1" male thread. If one side has to be male, choose Viega model 3092, which has an R end and an Rp end.

Which thread standard is it (G, R or Rp), and how is the joint sealed?

Both ends carry an Rp 1 thread to DIN EN 10226-1, a parallel female thread that mates with a tapered R 1 male thread. The joint seals in the thread itself: wind hemp onto the male thread and coat it with paste, or use PTFE tape or sealing cord. Viega recommends roughening smooth threads first so the sealant is not pushed out as you screw in.

Can this elbow be used on gas and heating lines?

Yes. Viega's instructions list gas installations and hot-water heating systems among the uses of its gunmetal threaded fittings, with LPG only in gaseous form. This 1" elbow is on the DVGW certificate. Viega's manual calls for a yearly visual check of gas installations, and installation must be left to a qualified firm.
