Each of the two press ends takes 16 mm pipe from Viega's own Smartpress, Pexfit Pro or Pexfit Fosta systems. Viega has not tested Smartpress connectors with pipe from other systems or manufacturers and says proper function cannot be ensured in that case, so keep to these pipes on both sides of the 16×16 mm coupling.

You need a press machine with constant pressing force fitted with Viega Smartpress jaws for plastic piping systems (model 2799.7 or 2784.7); in sizes 16–25 mm the hand press tool 2782.5 is an option. Cut the pipe cleanly and straight with a pipe shear; Pexfit Fosta pipe also needs Viega chamfer 2758.5 to strip its outer coating and aluminium layer over the press-sleeve length. Then check the insertion depth in the inspection window.

Before it is pressed, a Smartpress joint is deliberately not tight; SC-Contur is the Viega design feature behind this, not a standard. If one end of the coupling was missed, it reveals itself as a leak in the leak test; according to Viega this works with water between 1 and 6.5 bar and with air between 22 mbar and 3 bar. The installer must run this test before commissioning.
