Description

Viega Rotguss double nipple 1/2″ (model 3280, Art. 266592) is a 37 mm connector with an R1/2 male thread on each side. It screws into two 1/2″ female ports at the same time, so you can set a valve directly on a tee, a cross or a coupling.

The nipple is gunmetal (Rotguss grade), and its tapered threads to DIN EN 10226-1 are knurled at the factory. According to Viega, the polygonal middle section takes a 22 mm spanner for tightening.

The nipple is intended for drinking-water, heating and gas pipework; Viega approves the range for drinking water to DIN 1988 and for gas to DVGW-TRGI 2018. Sealing material is not included. If the port you are working on is larger, first fit a Rotguss reducer with a 1/2″ female outlet, into which this nipple screws directly. What do female and male thread mean, and which one does my pipe need?

A male thread sits on the outside of a part, a female thread inside its bore. This nipple is male at both ends (R1/2), so it only goes into 1/2" female ports, such as those of valves, tees or couplings. If your pipe itself ends in a male thread, it needs a part with a female thread instead, for example a coupling.

Can this nipple be installed on a gas line?

Yes. Art. 266592 is on the list of DVGW certificate DV-7401AO2957, which covers gas and water-supply products, and Viega approves the range for gas installations to DVGW-TRGI 2018. Seal the threads only with DVGW-marked, non-hardening sealants, and leave the installation to a firm qualified for gas work.

Do the threads need roughening before hemping?

Not on this nipple. Viega knurls its R male threads at the factory, so hemp can go straight onto both R1/2 ends of this 1/2" nipple. Viega recommends roughening only smooth threads, so that the sealant is not pushed out as the joint is screwed together; if you roughen one, for example with a saw blade, take care not to damage the thread flanks.
