The type depends on where the thread is cut: a female thread lines a bore, while a male thread runs round the outside of a part. Both ends of this 1/2" elbow have an R1/2 male thread, so it screws into female ports of the same size, such as a valve, a coupling or a tee. A pipe that itself ends in a male thread needs an elbow with a female end.
