Description

Viega plug 3/4″ (model 3290, Art. 320089) screws into a 3/4″ female opening and seals it, for example an unused outlet of a tee. It is the counterpart of a cap: a cap fits over a male end, while this plug sits inside a female thread.

The brass plug is 26 mm long and has a square head with an outer rim; Viega gives 14 mm as the size of the square. Its R 3/4 thread is tapered to EN 10226-1 and comes knurled from the factory, so you can wind hemp straight onto it without roughening the thread.

The plug is intended for drinking-water, heating and gas installations, and Art. 320089 is listed on DVGW certificate DV-7401AO2957. What do female and male thread mean, and which one does my pipe need?

It depends on where the thread sits: a female thread is inside a bore, a male thread on the outer surface. This plug has an R 3/4 male thread, so it needs a 3/4" female port to screw into, such as one on a valve body or fitting. A male-threaded pipe end is closed with a female-threaded cap, not with a plug.

Which thread standard is it (G, R or Rp), and how is the joint sealed?

R is the tapered male thread of EN 10226-1, made to seal inside a parallel Rp female thread, so no gasket is needed. Viega knurls its R threads at the factory, which lets hemp grip well without roughening. For sealing, use hemp with sealing paste, PTFE thread tape or thread-sealing cord.

What should I use to tighten this plug?

With a spanner fitted on the square head: Viega's table for Art. 320089 gives a square size of 14 mm, and the plug is 26 mm long overall. Before screwing it in, check that the thread is undamaged, then apply the sealant to the R 3/4 thread.
